I hit Merrill Lake last Saturday night for the Hexagena hatch. They’re starting to show and a light colored olive/yellow with brown something streaming back from the front landed me eight cutthroats in about 1.5 hours. Anywhere from 9” to 15 “. Caught between 8-9:30. Then I switched to a dry hexagena fly and every trout missed it in the attempt. If I’d a figured out the right bugger before 8 I’m sure I could’ve doubled my numbers. I failed on one large trout that felt like it was 18+. The lake holds browns, bows and cutts. The seem to only bite once and only one followed with multiple hits. Longer tailed buggers only gave me short strikes. If you go, I’d recommend across and left of the boat ramp as well as the two or three coves directly across from the boat ramp. Fly fishing only. Catch and release only.
