Work to replace I-90 Vantage Bridge deck set to get underway
VANTAGE – After years of patching and filling potholes, crews are now ready to replace the entire surface across the Vantage Bridge along Interstate 90.
The Washington State Department of Transportation and its contractor, Garco Construction, are building an access under the bridge in preparation for the replacement of the existing bridge deck. To minimize longer closures and delays, crews will replace the bridge deck with pre-cast concrete panels.
Beginning Monday, March 11, until the end of May, travelers will experience single-lane closures Monday through Friday. Beginning in late May, traffic will be restricted to one lane in each direction seven days a week with the following exceptions:
Memorial Day weekend: All lanes open from 7 a.m. Friday, May 24, until 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 28.
Fourth of July week: All lanes open from 7 a.m. Monday, July 1, until 8 p.m. Monday, July 8.
Labor Day weekend: All lanes open from 7 a.m. Friday, Aug. 30, until 8 p.m. Monday Sept. 3.
Travelers will experience long delays eastbound on Fridays and westbound on Sundays during the summer travel months and are encouraged to choose alternate routes.
Traffic will also be restored to two lanes in each direction for winter from November through April.
The Vantage Bridge was built in 1962. The last time the historic span across the Columbia River received a major overhaul was in 1982. Construction for this project will take approximately three years, with completion anticipated in fall 2027.
